(Feb 2) Living History Day at Fort Matanzas - The 18th century Spanish fort that guarded the southern approach to St. Augustine hosted by authentically clad re-enactors will demonstrate Spanish muskets and cannons at the fort. (Feb 23) NOCHE DE GALA (NIGHT OF THE GALA) - Menendez Birthday celebration for Don Pedro Menendez, founder of St. Augustine: 16th century masked ball celebrating the birthday of St. Augustine’s founder, don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. Guests will be escorted to the festivities by re-enactors in period clothing. Cocktail reception and dinner will be catered by the Casa Monica Hotel, followed by dancing to contemporary tunes. Attire is black tie or 16th century costume.
The celebration begins on Saturday, February 23rd at 5 p.m. with a grand and exciting procession through downtown St. Augustine to announce the arrival of Menéndez who will be accompanied by his colorful entourage. Starting at the City Gate, Menéndez will lead the procession down St. George Street to the front of the Lightner Museum, engaging the town folks as he inspects his colony and prepares to enjoy his birthday celebration, Noche de Gala. The exquisite Lightner Museum is the setting for the annual Noche de Gala, which starts with cocktails at 6:30 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom followed by dinner on the Mezzanine at 8 p.m. Entertainment features Menéndez, his entourage, 16th century musicians, heralding horns and swordsmen.
